Databases are encrypted using a very secure encryption algorithm (AES/Rijndael). KeePass is a free open source password manager, which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. So, until they develop such features in KeepassX 2.x I suggest you to use Keepass2. However, they can be used interchangeably as their .kdb or .kdbx databases are binary-compatible. KeePassX is an open-source clone of KeePass for Linux and OS X. As KeePassX uses QT, they don’t have the same user interface.

Lastly, I download KeePass and install it on the PC, use the key and .kdbx along with my Database password and that’s it! That’s plenty of scope to create a long, secure password. I’m using this way to my encrypted HDD partition (with truecrypt). If you think your password is going to be a bit weaker (and better for your memory), the key file is a good second factor. If the key file doesn’t contain exactly 32 bytes (256 bits), they are hashed with SHA-256, too, to form a 256-bit key. I’ll only be using the key file on 2 computers (one desktop and one laptop), wo which is the best option?

This algorithm compresses the user key provided by the user (consisting of password and/or key file) to a fixed-size key of 256 bits. Note that it’s definitely more appealing to use the key file for me because i have a hard time remembering anything close to a random password. Massive data dumps such as these become treasure troves for research of human behavior in the context of security. That said, its likely easier and faster to simply reset all your passwords. There is no way of recovering your passwords.
